Nakasongola gets modern fish handling facility

The government of Iceland has constructed a modern fish handling facility at Kibuye landing site on Lake Kyoga in Nakasongola district to improve fish handling in the area. The multi-million facility was handed over to the district authorities last week.

It has piped water, a four-stance pit latrine, changing rooms, garbage skips and a fish handling slab. It also has fish drying racks, a fish shed with stores and a parking area.

Presiding over the handover ceremony, the Nakasongola district chairman, James Wandira, said a committee would be set up to manage the facility and a sub-committee to manage the water supply system.

Wandira expressed hope that the facility, which was implemented by ICEIDA, the charity arm of the government of Iceland, will improve the quality of fish and sanitation in the area. He urged the people of Kibuye landing site to utilise the facility well to encourage donors to invest more in the area. The Iceland government has also constructed a fisheries office in Nakasongola town, trained fisheries personnel and beach management unit staff and provided motorbikes for fish monitoring
