Germany Embassy donates to Taekwondo

THE Germany embassy has handed over sports gear worth millions of shillings to Acholi Quarters Taekwondo club, in order to help the disadvantaged children from Northern Uganda prepare for three international tournaments.

Germany Deputy Head of Mission Joachim Duster handed over the kit that included head gears, body and leg guards, belts among others to Ahmed Bamuwayira, the coach of the club that is basically made up of orphans.

“It is something that will take us two years ahead. We have been practicing with little aid and winning medals and now that this has come up, we expect to have even better results at international level,” said Bamuwayira.

The club is aimed at helping to keep the youngsters busy and also help in building their discipline levels.

“Most of these youngsters were picking metals and bottles from the dustbins and we had to do something to see that we help them out before they are destroyed,” said Bamuwayira.

Duster promised even more support to the club.

“We are aware of the values of sport which include physical fitness, a healthy mind and unity among other things and when it is within the young people, it gives a potential future to them. We promise to support them further,” said Duster.

The club is preparing for the Rwanda International in January, which will help gauge their players ahead of the US Open in Las Vegas in February and  10th World Junior Championships in Taipei in July next year.
