20 universities battle for honours as the NUSFU games kick-off

The Archbishop of the church of Uganda, who doubles as the chancellor of Uganda Christian University, Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali flagged off the inter-university games that commenced Monday at UCU main campus.

 The arch-bishop Stanley Ntagali presided over the opening ceremony that had guests participating universities and National University Sports Federation of Uganda (NUSFU) officials. A total of 20 universities arrived Sunday with approximately 2800 students and officials.

HANDBALL: Ndejje played against Makerere University

These include Bishop Stuart, Bugema, Busitema, Gulu, Islamic University in Uganda, Kampala International University, Kabale, Kyambogo, Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Makerere University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Mountain of the Moon, Multitech, Muteesa 1 Royal University, Ndejje, Nkumba, Busoga, International University of East Africa and the host UCU.

Uganda Martyrs University, Livingstone and Cavendish are some of the universities that pulled out. The one-week championship that is expected to end on December 21 will also be part of the centenary celebrations as UCU marks 100 years since their pioneer institute Bishop Tucker College was founded.

Close to 340 officials are expected to take part in the event. These have been selected in consultation with the various national federations and National University Sports Federation of Uganda (NUSFU).

All the equipment, medals and trophies have been secured. Medical, accommodation and security facilities have been put in place to ensure that the games move on smoothly.

Team UCU, who have intensively prepared for these games, will take part in the 16 sports disciplines such as football, basketball, rugby, swimming, darts, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, athletics, netball, scrabble, wood ball, chess and karate among others.

Apart from the grounds within the university, fields at Namilyango College and Bishop senior schools will also be used for the games. Swimming will be held at Kampala Parents School.
