Kisoro in sh200 million drive to renovate hospital

Kisoro district hospital has launched a campaign to collect over sh200 million to go towards the renovation of its maternity ward to save the lives of mothers and newborn babies in the district.

The hospital on Friday launched the fundraising drive at a cocktail at Kati Kati restaurant during which over sh50 million was raised in cash and pledges.

Present were members of the Kisoro community living in Kampala who included former ethics minister Dr. Nsaba Buturo, former Kisoro woman MP Annette Mukabera, Bufumbira East MP Eddie Kwizera and the director Population Secretariat Charles Zirarema.

The function also marked that launch of series of fundraising activities that include a marathon to take place on December 23 with Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura as chief runner. The marathon will include heats for 5km, 12.5 km and 25 km with categories for runners, walkers, as well as bikers with an entrance fee of sh2, 000 per person.

The requirements for Kisoro hospital include equipment some of which include resuscitation kits, delivery beds, weighing scales, wheel chairs, stethoscopes, and ultrasound scan machines.

According to Dr. Michael Baganizi, the medical superintendent of Kisoro hospital, the hospital facilities such as the bathrooms and toilets also require renovation because they are dilapidated and could be a source of infection.

Also in need of replacement are the patient beds in the hospital, which are broken thereby forcing mothers and their newly born babies to sleep on the ground, Dr. Baganizi said.

Other planned activities to take place in Kisoro town include a 10-day trade exhibition from December 13th to December 23rd.

“This will give opportunity for all operators, business, companies, organizations to show case their works/activities to Bufumbira residents and their visitors,” said Dr. Baganizi who is also the chairperson of the steering committee for the fundraising.

There will also be a cultural gala and festival organized drawing participants from sub counties within the district, a fundraising luncheon, as well as a youth camp and music show.
