THE fate of City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago lies in the hands of councilors who are expected to convene a council with 14 days from the release of the Tribunal report.

On Thursday shortly after receiving the report, Minister for the Presidency and also Minister in Charge of Kampala Capital City Kampala Minister Frank Tumwebaze told the press that he would convene a meeting with the petitioners, respondent (Lukwago) to sort out their issue.

However lead petitioner Bruham Byaruhanga (Kyambogo) who led 16 others to petition Lukwago told the New Vision on phone that other five councilors have vowed to join the team in order to form the two thirds of the number required to throw out Lukwago.

“We have been joined by other councilors who had not signed the petition but are ready to stand with us for this noble cause,” Byaruhanga said.

On May 17, a group of 17 councilors, led by Byaruhanga, petitioned Kampala minister Frank Tumwebaze, demanding the removal of Lukwago.

Tumwebaze set up a tribunal, chaired by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire, to determine whether the petition meets the grounds provided for in the law to censure Lukwago.

The number of councilors now stands at 25, who are ready to have the Lord Mayor out of office Byaruhanga said.

According to the KCCA Act, 2010, if the Lord Mayor is impeached, the authority will have to pass the resolution, supported by votes of not less than two-thirds of all members.

The KCCA council is however not fully constituted. There are four professional councilors who have not been elected.
