4 killed in Jinja accident, scores injured

A Tata lorry carrying cement collided with an Omni-Bus taxi and killed four people on spot and ten others were rushed to hospital with broken limbs and deep cuts.

A Tata lorry carrying cement collided with a commuter taxi and killed four people on spot and ten others were rushed to hospital with broken limbs and deep cuts.


The 7:30am local time (EAT) accident happened at Kakira junction on Friday along the Jinja-Bugiri highway.

According to Canicius Mugisha, the Officer in Charge of Traffic, Kiira East division (Kakira), the lorry lost control as the driver tried to avoid a head-on collusion with a Premio vehicle.

But he instead knocked a passenger taxi and both vehicles swerved off the road and fell into a trench.

Four people died on spot.

The lorry was carrying cement from Tororo destined for Kampala while the taxi was from Kampala heading towards Iganga side.

But some people around the area made the most of the fatality.

Immediately after the accident, some were began stealing cement as they remorselessly looked on at injured survivors.

Police got to the scene after a tip off and helped transfer the injured to Jinja regional referral hospital. The dead were taken to the Jinja mortuary.

The dead included; Petero Ofwono a resident of Ndeeba, Rose Nyawere a resident of Bunga in Kampala, a13-year-old and a four-year-old child.
