UNIVERSITIES have been urged to collaborate and do joint research in order to minimise costs and reduce dependence on donors.
A senior academician, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, said working jointly would enable Ugandan universities to do research, which is not dictated by donors and is in the interest of the nation and economic development.
Kagonyera, who is the Chancellor of Makerere University, was officiating at the 15th graduation ceremony of Ndejje University at the university’s main campus on Friday.
A total of 1,938 graduands were awarded degrees, diplomas and certificates during the function held under the theme; “Improving of physical infrastructure.”
Kagonyera said through co-operation, it is possible for universities to have experienced external examiners, common courses taught together, co-supervision of graduate students and staff development.
“Students registered at Ndejje University may study a course offered by Makerere University and vice-versa,” he added.
Kagonyera hailed Ndejje and Makerere universities for sharing seminars, saying it was a sign of healthy collaboration between universities.
Turning to the theme of the graduation, he urged university administrators to be mindful of the physical infrastructure of their institutions in addition to the quality of education that they provide.
Kagonyera said for a university to produce quality products, it should be concerned about the improvement of its physical infrastructure.
He hailed Ndejje University for setting up quality infrastructure.
“I am happy that the story of Ndejje is self-evident. Just look around you. There are gorgeous buildings, paved walkways and well maintained playgrounds,” Kagonyera said.
He advised the graduands to use the skills acquired and practice integrity with accountability.
The vice-chancellor of Ndejje University, Prof. Eliab Lugujjo, said the university principles were embedded in the university’s grand motto of offering excellent, innovative and cost effective programmes, raising God-fearing students and promoting Christian principles and values.
Lugujjo said the university provides its programmes through sound scholarship, research and a conducive study environment.
The Member of Parliament for Katikamu South, Kiddu Makubuya, commended the Government for legalising private universities.
He said the administration of Ndejje University deserved credit for building the institution to its current strength, but the NRM government deserved greater credit for allowing private universities to operate.
