First Lady and Ruhaama Member of Parliament, Janet Museveni, has urged women in Jinja to join various development SACCOs and make more savings which they will use in establishing income generation projects.

Janet Museveni, who is also the Karamoja Affairs Minister, was on Saturday meeting a delegation of over 190 women from six women groups from Jinja West Municipality constituency in Jinja district, led by MPs Moses Balyeku and Agnes Nabirye, who visited her at State House Entebbe to dialogue on how they can improve on their livelihoods and get out of poverty.

“For those in women groups, turn them into SACCOs and continue saving because those SACCOs will in the end grow and develop into small village banks but I urge you not to depend so much on loans, just save more.”

“Once the savings accumulate in the Small village banks, you will be able to improve your household incomes and boost food security in your families,” she said.

She told women that their visit at State House marked the beginning of change in their lives adding that they also got a new vision of hope and inspiration so that they change their homes and live a better life.

“Uganda is not a poor country but our people do not know what to do to change themselves and build their families. We have a paradise (Uganda) given to us by God and we are doing nothing with it, thereafter cry of poverty; others die of it and we even beg from donors.”

“These donors who send us money work day and night so I am also challenging you women of Jinja to work hard and improve on your incomes, save and plan for your money later and this is how you will make your families more self reliant,” she advised.

She later donated seed money to the six SACCOs to enable them grow their savings and change their lives.

“I have given you this seed money and continue planting in your SACCOs so that you may harvest bigger that what you have planted and I caution you not to eat it because you will harvest nothing,” she said.

Moses Balyeku, the Jinja West Municipality MP, hailed the First family for the support to Jinja women and pledged to supervise the distribution of seed money into the SACCOs.

“It was the first meeting ever at State House where Jinja women, mostly low income earners, from the grassroots met the First Lady and they have received a lecture from Enterprise Uganda that has given them wisdom on how they can improve their house hold incomes,” said Balyeku.

In their memorandum as groups to the First Lady, Jinja Women requested for Government’s support to improve their small enterprises and livelihoods at grassroots so that they may earn money and be able to take their children to schools.

They pointed out the need to build their entrepreneurial and business skills.
