Religious leaders launch prosperity campaign

Clerics under their body Inter Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) have launched a set of commitments to guide Ugandans in the pursuit of prosperity of the country.

Chairperson Council of Presidents at IRCU, Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga, said the commitments include God fearing, health, harmony, security, stability, caring and prosperity all geared at realising the country’s vision 2040.

“These commitments were arrived at through a nation-wide consultation of religious leaders,” Lwanga said.

He added that besides they have also come up with values which they think should govern the country if the nation is to realise fully its aspirations and potential.

“The values are dialogue, honesty and stewardship, sharing, equity, unity and peace co-existence,” Lwanga noted.

He made the remarks during a press conference on Tuesday at their headquarters in Namirembe in which the clerics also wished the country a happy independence anniversary.

They will this month launch the commitments in all their 13 regions throughout the country.

“After the countrywide launch, religious leaders will read the commitment and values at every prayer session for months until citizens internalise and begin to apply them in their every day lives and in appraising the conduct of their leaders at all levels,” he explained.

Lwanga said the launched commitments are against the backdrop of a number of critical challenges to the development of the country.

“We call on Ugandans to wake up and put pressure on leaders to account for public resources and their political and administrative actions.  This responsibility is cut out for you in our national constitution,” he said.

Clerics also asked the public to support the Government in areas where their contribution is required.

“We will continue to pray for you and for our leaders including the President, so that God will give you wisdom and courage to love your and be good stewards of its resources,” Lwanga said.
