Maj Gen Oketta for UN advisory job

Uganda People’s Defense Forces’ (UDPF) representative in parliament, Major General Julius Oketta has been endorsed to join the advisory group of the United Nations (UN) Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

The UN secretary general had endorsed Maj .Gen Julius Oketta who was nominated by the Ugandan government to join the UN CERF for a three-year non-renewable term.

The group is scheduled to a hold a meeting in New York starting November 4 and 5, to which Maj general Oketta has been invited.

The meeting will kick off with an introductory session for the new members, and is expected to be chaired by the CERF advisory group, Ms Catherine Walker from Austrialia.

CERF is a humanitarian fund established by the United Nations General Assembly to enable more timely and reliable humanitarian assistance to those affected by natural disasters and armed conflict

The advisory group plays an important role to advise the Emergency Relief Coordinator on how to make the fund as efficient and effective as possible

Last year, the fund disbursed close to $500million coming from governments and non-public donors.

CERF has been used for life-saving activities around the globe, making it a crucial instrument for UN humanitarian assistance.
