MEXICO CITY - A 10-year-old Mexican boy was killed by a crocodile that appeared in his village after storm-swollen rivers brought out reptiles in the south of the country, officials said Monday.

The attorney general's environmental protection office said 28 crocodiles have been captured in urban areas since tropical storms Ingrid and Manuel lashed opposite coasts of Mexico two weeks ago.

The boy was playing with his 13-year-old brother by a swollen river in the southern state of Oaxaca last Friday when a four-meter (13-foot) long crocodile grabbed the child's head and dragged him for a few meters before letting go.

The giant reptile was captured on Sunday and taken to a national park with a crocodile sanctuary with guards on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.
