Ten students of Kyambogo University have been arrested as a strike protesting a new tuition policy entered its second day.

Students are protesting a new policy that requires them to complete tuition fees in six weeks.

The students have since Monday gone on strike, challenging the new policy, which they branded inconsiderate and unrealistic by Kyambogo University administration.

During the demonstration, ten students were arrested for pelting stones at the University main block, inciting violence, blocking Jinja road highway and unruly behaviour.

The students are being detained at Jinja Road police Station, pending further police investigations. The university, which reopened over the weekend for a new academic year, was also closed for close to seven hours over the violence.

By press time police was still heavily deployed at the University premises to ensure peace, as the administration staff abandoned offices and others locked themselves in.

The Jinja road Police Commander, Wesealy Nganizi, told New Vision, police will continue with its deployment at the premises until the situation normalises.
