THIS year's Tusker Malt Lager Uganda Golf Open due September 4-8 at Entebbe Club promises to be a high quality event.

This is after the 71st edition of amateur golf's top event got a sh100m sponsorship from Uganda Breweries Limited.

Close to 200 golfers from the East African region are expected to battle for honours.

Announcing the sponsorship during a press conference at Uganda Golf Club, Uganda Breweries Marketing Director Grace Gwaku said the sponsorship was a commitment to the development of the sport in the country.

"We are sponsoring this event through our premium beer Tusker Malt Lager which is East Africa's number one premium lager," Gwaku said.

"Golf is a premium sport, so it is such a perfect blend for us."

“We are committed to nurturing East Africa's golf talent and therefore this sponsorship is intended to create an opportunity for Uganda to showcase her golfing skills because our players will be pitted against some of the best in this event,”

UGU vice president Kiryowa Kiwanuka said about 100 people have so far registered for the main event, 60 for the subsidiary event and about 40 professionals are expected.

Entebbe Golf Club chairman Oscar Kihiika said the course is in good shape.

"We have a premium course," Kihiika said.
