The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has advised youth to refrain from engaging in elective politics if they are to improve their personal livelihood.

He said politics should be treated as a service and not a job to avoid corruption and compromising of leaders.

The remarks were made Monday during Buganda’s 22nd session of the 5th Lukiiko (parliament) held at the Kingdom's headquarters at Bulange Mengo.

“Why should a young person who has just left university join politics? I perceive politics as a service which can only be done by people who are content with what they have achieved in life. The right thing to do is first securing personal development because even at 40 years of age, one still has the capacity to lead,” Mayiga explained.

He added that having young people who are still yearning to create wealth in elective politics leads to compromise and corruption because such people can easily be persuaded to change their stands on important decisions in exchange for money.

Mayiga called upon the Baganda to vote for only people who respect the Kabaka and with the ability to unite the people of Uganda.

Meanwhile, government is set to return more of Buganda’s property including 82 land titles and a motor vehicle, a Rolls Royce, which belonged to the Kingdom’s departed Ssekabaka, Sir Edward Mutesa II.

President Yoweri Museveni is expected to hand over the property to the Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga at State House Entebbe Tuesday.

The ceremony will be graced by among others, Prince David wasajja and central government’s attorney general, Fred Ruhindi.

Using a Muslim phrase Insha’Allah (God willing), Mayiga confirmed that the hand over to the Mengo based government follows a series of meetings with the president in the last one month.

“I visited the president’s private residence in Rwakitura to demand for ebyaffe. Subsequently I was invited at State House Entebbe to discuss the same and as a result, tomorrow we shall receive 82 land titles and Sekabaka Muteesa’s Rolls Royce Insha’Allah,” Mayiga said.

On April, 15 2014 Government returned 213 land titles to the kingdom as part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by President Museveni and the Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

The properties were confiscated by Government in 1967 when monarchies were abolished and Uganda declared a republic and unitary state.

As part of the MOU, government in September last year was supposed to return the 82 land titles but the event was postponed twice because of the President’s busy schedule.

Ruhindi confirmed to New Vision that Mengo will receive its land titles from the President.

Buganda’s treasurer, Eva Nagawa Mukasa, read the Kingdom's budget for the financial year 2015/2016 to the Lukkiko.

She said that with a targeted income of sh8,949b, they are expecting to spend sh5,458b majorly on  monthly expenditures and development projects.

She added that, “In the financial year 2014/15, a total of sh6,397b was generated to the Kingdom's treasury of the sh7,391b that was projected and sh3,351b was spent from the budgeted sh3,534b.”
