A 40-year-old man has committed suicide in Ongako sub county Gulu district over losing his property and money in gambling

A 40-year-old man has committed suicide in Ongako sub county Gulu district over losing his property and money in gambling.

 

The tragic incident happened at around 2AM on Sunday morning after Christopher Okumu lost his property after playing a game of cards.

 

The Ongako sub county secretary for health and education Labella Jella and area LC3 Councilor for Patunda parish, positively identified Okumu aka Acike, who has been working as a security guard at Kweyo Primary School in Te-Owaka village.

 

Labella explained that Okumu committed suicide in his house by ingesting poisonous insecticides used for fighting against mosquitoes.

 

He noted that amongst the properties Okumu lost in include 1 bicycle, 90,000 shillings, a mobile phone and clothes.

 

Labella attributed the death to failure by many people to share their problems with others so that they can be supported and offered advice.

 

The Ongako sub county Gombolola Internal Security Officer (GISO) Alphonse Kilama noted that the late Okumu before his death, wrote a will spelling out reasons for his death that included having debts of over sh3m.

 

Others include his wish to be buried when all his children are present, his wife to take good care of his children, an appeal to his children to live a responsible life by desisting from criminal activities as well as listing names of all those who owe him debts and implored his family members to clears the debts.

 

Kilama noted that crimes and death accruing from illegal activities like gambling and drug abuse has become rampant.

 

Okumu is survived by two children and a widow.
