Makerere to release internship allowance

Makerere University students who have not received their internship allowances will receive their money by Monday.

Over 1000 students had not received their internship allowances by Friday, which triggered a demonstration.

According to the university policy on internship, students are supposed to pay sh100,000 per semester, on top of tuition.

Out of the sh600,000 accumulated over a period of three years, sh378,000 is given to the students as facilitation while in the field and the rest is given to lecturers who supervise the students.

The students’ guild president, David Bala, in an interview said that the guild had been consulting the university administration over the issue, but they were told that the system broke down.

“It is now two weeks since students reported to various organizations for internships, but a large number have not received their allowance,” Bala said.

However when consulted, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the deputy vice chancellor in charge of administration, said the system broke down, causing the delay.

“The first batch of internship fees was released to students whose accounts were registered early. The second batch will be released to the students’ accounts by Monday, next week,” Nawangwe said.
