Students create agro-market mobile app in Orange competition

MAKERERE - Curtains were drawn on the Orange community innovations awards on Thursday, with Lisa Katusime and Isaac Omoit emerging as the top-prize winners.

The duo was rewarded with sh10m reward for having the most impressive idea in mobile application (app) development in this year's competition.

The telecom company had set out to recognize young people who have developed different type of apps.

Vision Group was the official media partner.

Katusime and Omoit put together an app – Agro-market day app – which features details of agricultural markets, market days, farmers and products sold in different markets in different parts of Uganda.

The selection and awarding of the most innovative students took place at the 3rd annual community innovations awards exhibition at Makerere University main hall.

This is part of the annual competition that Orange Uganda organises for university finalist students to develop mobile applications that are relevant to community issues in the areas of health, education and agriculture.

The telecom company partnered with various institutions:  Makerere University as academic partner, Vision Group for media, Huawei for devices for the participants and CEO Summit for training and mentoring partner.

Speaking at the function, Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi advised all youths to exploit their talents through innovation as the sure way of fitting in a competitive environment.
