Luuka residents advised on commercial agriculture

Residents of Luuka district have been urged to embrace commercial agriculture as a way of fighting the high levels of poverty that has hit the area.

Daudi Migereko , the minister for lands, housing and urban development said commercial agriculture was the only remedy for people in Luuka district to improve on their house hold incomes.

“Luuka district has rich soils and I believe once you embrace commercial agriculture, then people in the area will be liberated of poverty. You don’t have to lament of poverty all the time when you have the needed resources,” he said.

Migereko made the remarks during a burial service for Joyce Balyainho that was held in Bulanga in Luuka district on Tuesday. 

Balyainho was the mother to the Jinja Resident District Commissioner, Richard Gulume Balyainho.

Migerko noted that since the National Agricultural and Advisory Services (NAADS) project was revised, its high time residents utilize the program to get farm inputs and use them as start -up capital.

The speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga who was the chief mourner urged the residents to befriend people from other areas so that they are able to learn from them different creative ways of fighting poverty.

“We have different cultures and experiences in different activities, once you create friendship and also show them respect then you will be on the right track to fight poverty,” Kagada said.

The speaker called upon parents to love their children and also ensure they are enrolled in school as a way of insuring their future.

“Educating your children is the only source of earning in a family because after they (children) are done with education, they can be able to start up a new life without depending on you as their parents,” she said.

Muhammad Kezaala Baswari, the mayor of Jinja mayor cautioned mourners that as we approach the 2016 general elections, people should have in mind the aspect of respect for each other despite the political party one belongs to.
