Moses Sabika, a resident of, Bugujju village Mukono district practices farming on a 7-acre piece of land.

He has been doing this for the last 6 years and given the experience he has, he decided to major in rearing chicken, cattle and piggery.

His way of doing things has made many around his home area look up to him in whatever they do.

Today, he rears thousands of chicken both broilers and kroilers and from which he makes about sh6m annually.

How he started

He started in 2011 with just 50 broilers which he sold at sh8,000 each and earned sh400,000.

This figure showed him that he was on the right track.  He re-invested the money in poultry.

His second trial earned him a million shillings and that way he kept on adding on the number.

After being successful in poultry, he decided to venture into piggery and cattle rearing.

Today he rears thousands and his profits have really accumulated.

Achievements

Sabika has acquired several plots of land and hopes to set up a big farm for both birds and pigs.

He also pays his children school fees from the profits he gets from his rearing.

He has gardens where he grows his food for subsistence use and here he uses the chicken droppings as fertilizers.

He also sells to others as manure which still increases on his earnings.

Challenges

He says the fake feeds on the market sometimes discourage him from rearing.

This is because when you give them to your birds or pigs, they don’t grow well, which limits on the money one is supposed to earn.

He adds that the thieves who steal from his farm are a big threat to his development coupled with a number of poultry diseases like chicken pox which are hard to treat.

However his success comes because he prepares himself for the dry season. As other farmers complain about scarcity of grass, Sabika gives his animals silage which he prepares in advance.
