At least 960 students of Kagamba ss in Kajara County Ntungamo district were on Friday sent home after staging a strike claiming that they don’t want the newly elected head boy.
Police fired in air to disperse rowdy students who were threatening to burn the school if the administration doesn’t arrange another election for a head boy.
This is the second school to be closed in one locality over a strike in a period of 7 days after, Muntuyera high school Kitunga that was closed last Friday.
Kagamba ss is a government aided mixed day and boarding school while Muntuyera high school is the boys’ school.
Head teacher Kagamba ss, Genesius Kwatakare said students had elections last week and elected, Junior Rukundo S 5 arts student as their head boy but few of his opponents have mobilized other students to disorganize his swearing in ceremony that was scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday).
“We had prepared hand over and swearing in ceremony for new leaders, tomorrow Saturday but on Thursday night students threaten to lynch the head boy and took all his belongings to his home about 20km away from school claiming that they don’t want him in school,” Kwatakare said.
He added that he called urgent board of governors meeting on Friday morning, but students turn un rule and threaten to burn the school which forced us to call police to intervene.
One of the students said on condition of anonymity that, the new head boy was the spy of the administration and was mainly voted by the girls after being convinced by the administration.
Another source said the cause of the strike was the postponement of the dance that was scheduled two weeks ago but keeps on postponing it.
Meanwhile the head teacher, Muntuyera high school Kitunga, Yorokamu Kamaringo has said that school board of Governors has decided to call back students on Monday and will report with their parents so that the ring leaders can be disciplined by the parents.
