A record 183 golfers from across the country participated in the revived Mbarara Golf Open that ended on Saturday.

Kabale Golf Club’s secretary Edwin Muhereza topped the two-day event after returning 42 stableford points in the tournament that returns after six years.

National team player Gideon Kagyenzi’s hole in one was the highlight of the tournament. Using a six iron Taylor Made driver and a Pro V red Titleist ball, Kagyenzi achieved the rare feat on the par 3 hole number 12 in the company of Denis Kabarila and Davis Kashaka.

National team captain Adolf Muhumuza won the gross category with 147 gross over 36 holes, leading a number of team mates who shared the first ten positions in this category.

Professional golfer Phillip Kasozi was the most unfortunate after he was disqualified for signing for a wrong score.

Kasozi ‘s 149 gross over two rounds was the best of the lot but a mistake by his marker which he didn’t rectify was to later cost him the win.

Fred Wanzala who returned 152 was the immediate beneficiary of the mishap walking away with the biggest share of sh10m provided by tournament sponsors China Railway Seventh Group.

Pepsi and Café Ark were the co-sponsors of the event that attracted golfers from Kigali, UGC, Entebbe, Palm Valley, Toro, Kinyara, Tororo, Jinja, Kabale and Lira golf clubs.
