A group of pilgrims from neighbouring Kenya has camped at St. Kaloli Lwanga, Mbiko parish, preparing to get back on road at 3.00am local time Sunday.

The team is on a journey to the martyrs’ shrine in Namugongo ahead of the Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations due on Wednesday.

Coming from various parts of Kenya, they are part of a larger group of Christians expected to attend the event – marked every year on June3.

Early Saturday, the Kenyans left Rubaga Cathedral in Jinja headed for Mbiko Parish, their next resting point.

The team is moving in groups with their leaders keeping behind to watch over the last of the pilgrims.

It was songs of praise and worship as the Christian faithful trekked along the Jinja highway, soldiering on with determination until they reached Mbiko.

Upon arrival there, the pilgrims were registered and off they went for individual prayers – praising and thanking God for their safe arrival.

Early on Sunday, they getting back on the road, with their sights set on Mabira forest where they will hold a Mass in remembrance of one of their colleagues, John Kibe, who died in an accident during his journey in 1999.

The site where he was buried in the forest has since become a stop-over point for all pilgrims coming from Kenya.

Overall, there are about 500 Christians making the pilgrimage from Kenya this year. Their target is to arrive in Namugongo on Monday.
