Is there anything wrong with being a virgin at 24?

Dear Counselor, I am 24 and still a virgin. My peers tell me I have a problem! Is there anything wrong with being a virgin at that age?

Counselor’s response

Dear Hanifa,
Peer pressure and what we watch on TV and on the Internet can have a great influence and make it more difficult to abstain from sex.

It appears like everybody else is having sex and some end up doing it for the sake of being accepted as girlfriends or boyfriends.

Complete abstinence does not involve sexual contact. It also saves one from the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhea, HIV, chlamydia, syphilis or genital warts) and dealing with unwanted pregnancies. There is nothing wrong with being a virgin.

Most people who start sexual life when still young do not give chance for their feelings to grow. Later, their sex life overpowers the need to be lovers. Most of them end up being flickers of love (jumpy).

So, giving in to sex to your boyfriend or girlfriend does not mean he/she will not drop you. Sex, just like money, is not a sign or expression of true love.

Some youth  tend to brag about sex, when in actual sense they are still virgins. Those who believe in them may suffer dire consequences of unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and dropping out of school.

Bragging, while not doing it, may save a lot as sexual status is not written on one’s forehead.
