Designer Carlton Walusimbi did an amazing job, putting together the Fashion Sense show at Alfredo’s Dine out in Bukoto last Thursday.

He managed to get models some nice heels, saving us from the measly sight of models cat walking in worn out shoes. He also tried to make sure that all the models had the same hair style, which obviously upped their game.

The run way too was nicely done by Flex Impressions, although the mood lighting and the smoke turned out to be annoying, sometimes you could not tell the exact colour of the clothes due to the lights.

It was a full house of fashion enthusiasts. Brenda Among’s Afribreeze collection was the first to be showcased.  This designer had a collection of playful little outfits, which included shorts, skirts and jumpsuits made from African prints. She found a way to convert our African fashion into outfits every young girl could relate to, and clearly her collection was one you could not forget.

Next was MS Jewellery, which showcased the usual beads, why do all these jewellery makers only think of beads as the only raw material?

Etende, with the E19 collection, was a big relief from all the designers who were showcasing only women’s attire. However when the designer was asked to describe the outfits, he said, “they are Thursday, Friday and Saturday clothes.”

That is just a snippet of the kind of answers the designers were giving when asked to describe their collections.  Designers need to read fashion publications, watch interviews and also take some public speaking lessons for the fashion industries sake!

SN craft decided to shower the runway with the normal `African shirts’, the type you usually find displayed all over African village or any African shop. Ummh! The Macho Men collection by one of the show organizers, Carlton Walusimbi, had some body hugging shirts, with some painting on them. It definitely looked good and raised the temperatures of the girls in the building.

The show was punctuated by lots, and I mean lots, of upcoming artists and the not so funny jokes of the emcees, Desire and Mel B.

There are some things fashion designers should do away with if they want to be taken seriously. Please stop with the endless performances of unserious upcoming artists and the emcees you pick out from the audience.

Designers must also take note that splashing paint on things and tailoring clothes in kitenge, tie and die, and kente cloth doesn’t turn them into African designer clothes. Designers really need to take it up a notch higher.

KCHD was the last to showcase its collection. It was a promising work of art, they found a way to play with the fabrics and the result was bold and creative outfits, which wowed the audience.
