It was joy and tears as the Azam Premier League came to an end on Tuesday.
As Vipers celebrated winning the league in Buikwe the battle for relegation survival was also producing drama of its own with Lweza, Simba, Kira Young and Soana battled for survival.
Sserunkuma impact
Former KCCA FC striker Geoffrey Sserunkuma’s first half strike against his former side guided Lweza to a crucial 1-0 win that helped them avoid the drop at Lugogo.
Sserunkuma struck in the 20th minute to help his side win their 4th match in seven games to jump out of the relegation zone and also claim a double against the former champions. Lweza beat KCCA 1-0 in the first round.
Payback time
It was sweet revenge for Lweza who had twice lost to KCCA FC in the two-legged semi-final of the Uganda Cup with 1-0 score lines before Tuesday’s game; due to what their coach Hamza Kalanzi attributed to ‘focusing too much on league survival’.

“We had gone six matches unbeaten so we came here at worst to get a draw because we have had a six match run where we picked three wins and three draws, so we were confident of picking a good result,” Kalanzi said after the match.
It was tears at Namboole for hard fighting Kira Young who lost 2-1 to Simba.
Simba opened the scoring in added time of the first half through Patrick Gonahasa, before Robert Nakyenalire extended their lead in the second half.
Kira’s hard work was rewarded when they pulled a goal back through Godfrey Ssembatya but it wasn’t enough for them as the relegation monster devoured them.
Despite losing to Police 1-0 at Kavumba Soana rode their luck and survived the chop.
Kira joins Rweshama and Entebbe in the drop zone.
