YOUNDSTERS will form the backbone of teams as the 26th edition of the Castle Lite inter-region golf tournament heads to Kilembe Golf Club, Kasese on July 19-20.
All the twenty national team junior golfers will be spread out amongst the four regions in the two-day match-play event.
Castle Lite’s Isaac Sekasi yesterday unveiled a sh40m sponsorship to the event, presented to UGC officials Kiryowa Kiwanuka and Johnson Omollo at Kitante.
Addressing the press at the Uganda Golf Club yesterday, UGC vice president-competitions Kiryowa Kiwanuka said the Union decided to start rotating such premier events in order to develop the golf facilities around the country.
“With such sponsorships the identity of golf is going to change in the country. Uganda has 13 playable courses but only three have 18 holes, we want to change that so that over time we develop them to the required standards. We can only develop these facilities by using them and giving opportunity to golfers in those regions to participate, Kiwanuka said.
Eastern region captain Kituuma Magala who was present said Western region who are the defending champions should expect a stiff challenge from the rest as they will all be competing on unfamiliar territory.
Each region will be represented by twenty four players of which four will be ladies. The best twenty scores will count for each team. Competition is limited to players of handicap 18 (men) and 24 (ladies).
Western who has won the event for a record 15 times are defending champions.
