KAMPALA - As Vision Group’s Urban TV widens its coverage, over 15 regional correspondents have been trained in TV skills to capture stories that meet the increasing demand of the station’s audiences.

The training was conducted at the Vision Group headquarters in Industrial Area, Kampala.

According to the New Vision managing editor, David Mukholi, the training is intended to build a team that can deliver in news gathering as Urban TV reaches more parts of Uganda.

"We are rolling out across the country and we want to replicate the success of the New Vision newspaper and make Urban TV the best English Channel in the country," said Mukholi said.

The two-year-old TV station run which started off in Kampala has now expanded its coverage to Arua, Gulu, Lira and Soroti and other areas.

"We have made some significant strides, initially operating in the central region, but we have now expanded to West Nile, Acholi sub-region and eastern and therefore, the need to train our regional correspondents to file stories for the audiences of those regions," said Micheal Owor, the TV’s station manager.

He pointed out that there are so many incredible stories countryside and therefore, the need to equip the TV correspondents on how to tell such stories for the audiences' consumption.

Owor noted that regional correspondents need to cover stories that highlight the existing poor service delivery countryside so as to draw the attention of the authorities.

He urged the young audience of Urban TV to take advantage of the platform to showcase their success stories.

The training was conducted by Joachim Buwembo, a consultant, who said the objective of the training was to equip the correspondents with television skills – reporting both conceptual and technical and to reach out to a national audience.

"The purpose is to strengthen Urban TV coverage outside Kampala and to reach out to other audiences in all corners of Uganda," said Buwembo.

He implored the correspondents to ensure that the stories they file have perspective, consequence/impact and illustrated in-depth scripts.
