Bugerere started this year’s Masaza Cup edition with a slender home win over Kyagwe in Kayunga.

Alex Semuyaba scored the winning goal ten minutes before the final whistle to give the hosts the edge.

They will be hoping to win this Cup for the first ever – but to achieve that milestone, the Kayunga-based side will have to dig even deeper.

The visitors, who lost to Kyadondo at the quarter-final stage last year, frustrated Bugerere in the first half, and almost went ahead but the home goalkeeper did well to claw out a dangerous effort.

Kyagwe bossed possession with their more aggressive captain in the midfield right up to the time of the break.

But once with the ball, it was the hosts who appeared more comfortable and lethal, with the likes of former Singo players Nasser Nsubuga and Mark Jero linking up brilliantly.

Kyagwe kept the home attackers out, but could only hold up the pressure until deep in the second half when Semuyaba nodded in from a Jalil Zimula pass.

Bugerere’s next fixture is against Bulemenzi away at Bukalansa on Sunday while Kyagwe will host Buruuli on the same day.
