THE national netball team has kicked off the third edition of the African Nations Challenge Championships with victory after thumping Swaziland 45-18 despite having endured a road trip of over 1801kms to Blantyre, Malawi for the week-long contest.

Uganda’s dependable goal shooter Peace Proscovia put height advantage to use as she netted 31 goals single handedly in a game that Uganda led 36-18 by halftime.

Later in the second half Proscovia was assisted by teammates Hadijah Nakabuye who was later substituted by Rachael Nanyonga in the third quarter as they jointly netted the other 38 goals as Uganda maintained the lead to secure their first victory in the game played at the Malawi College of Medicine sports complex.

Ugandan will now playing Namibia in their second group stage encounter today as the quest for title continues.

UNF general secretary Annet Kisomosi said that the team is focused and is using the tournament to prepare for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

“The girls haven’t fully recovered from fatigue but this has not stopped us from our targets. We have to win this event in order to qualify for the Commonwealth Games and the players are all aware.” Kisomosi stated.

Uganda in Pool B, and is scheduled to face giants South Africa who are ranked second on the continent on Thursday.

South Africa walloped Namibia 75-34 while Botswana lost their first game to Zambia in a game that ended 55-41.
