Uganda Rowing Federation (URF) has approved 12 former rowers to Level One coaches at a function that was held at the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) offices in Lugogo, Kampala.

The theoretical and practical trainings that have been ongoing for the last four months saw six participants whose names were not disclosed fail to complete all the training stages but according to national rowing coach Rodrick Muhumuza, the inaugural training was a success.

“We opted to keep those names confidential because they still have an opportunity to take part in the next training but otherwise the whole training was a success with very few setbacks,” Muhumuza said.

“The biggest challenge to most of the attendants was during the practicals because atleast everyone needed to know how to swim and that’s why some participants had to drop out willingly,” he added.

The training was intended to develop a coaching framework for rowing coaches in the country and according to Muhumuza the 12 will be monitored on a regular basis.

“Qualifying to be a level one coach is not the end of everything. We are going to monitor their day to day activities and those who will be found dormant will not be called upon for the level two training later this year,” he stated.

UOC’s William Blick presided over the ceremony that saw nine men and three ladies, William Mwange, Douglas Kasarale, Farouk Baluku, Derrick Kato, Kwirijira Mugisha, Alfred Okello, Ismail Mugumya, Haruna Sseruwaji, Samuel Onyango, Norah Ssewankambo, Betty Nabifo and Suzan Nabukenya awarded certificates.
