Frank Nsubuga, the most experienced member of the Cricket Cranes, has advised the newcomers to the senior national team to go an extra mile if they are to realise their full potential.

“The young players have the talent but they will need to work on their game to perform at the high level,” Nsubuga told New Vision.

“They are going to play for Uganda for a long time but they need to improve their attitude going forward.”

Nsubuga, who made his national team debut over 15 years ago added, “When we were still young players, we improved by pushing ourselves.

“We would go and be around national team trainings even though we were not part of the national team.

“But many of today’s young players don’t have that kind of drive. If they are not called up to the team, they stay away.”

The 34 year-old Nsubuga remains an integral part of the national setup and was part of the 14-man line-up at the just concluded ICC T20 Africa Championship in Johannesburg, where the Cranes narrowly missed out on a top-two finish following a shock five-run capitulation to Ghana on the final day.

Nsubuga, the Cranes captain in the 50-50 overs format, put Uganda’s last-gasp surrender to the collective inexperience of the team that took part in tournament.

“We were on course to comfortably win that game and we were all confident,” Nsubuga explained.

“But I guess when I was quickly dismissed, the players who came in after me, since most were young, panicked and we lost the game to Ghana.”
