I will buy a plane out of music, says Qute Kaye

Qute Kaye was a rising star who seemed to have vanished off the local pop music scene, only resurfacing in rumours that he was dead. He has recently joined a handful of local artistes who front weekly live music sessions in local nightspots. Denis Dibele spoke to him about this change in direction and rumours of his untimely demise

trueWe have not heard your music on radio in a while. Have you changed from Qute to Quiet Kaye?
I am not on radio because you, in the media, are not paying me to be there. That is the reason my music is not played. Musically, nobody does what I can do. I had a financial crash in my music and went quiet. However, I am back with Qute Kaye and Family band.

We play live gigs every week. But then, I am good and so is my music. To me, a setback is a set up for a comeback and here I am back with a new song. It is called Nyumirwa Omukwano.

You have been announced critically ill or dead several times. Why is this?
Maybe there are those that want me dead. The media has been pissing me off with that kind of reporting. First, they report that I am terribly sick, then next thing you hear I am in a coma.

The most recent one I heard was that I was the late singer Martin Angume. This is the work of my haters. But I have had my scrapes and survived.

Some time back, while coming from the P-Square concert, someone tried to stab me and, two months later, another person tried to stone me at the National Theatre.

What don’t people know about Qute Kaye?
I have been painted as someone who romances and sleeps with every woman I meet and that I am oversexed. This is the work of my haters.

When you are good, you have haters; if people are buying cars out of music, I am going to buy an aeroplane very soon.

You talk about haters a lot. Do you at least have some friends?
I am alone at the moment, with no one I call a friend. Toxic people are the ones that contribute to one’s downfall, together with fake friends; that is what I figured out.

For now it’s my family that are my friends. And my band too.
