Uganda Christian University male Sportsman of the year 2014 David Oringa has urged fellow students to ensure they not only compete in sports but also save some time for academics to fight redundancy after their sports careers.

Oringa was speaking during a thanks giving dinner organized for the sportsmen and women who represented the University at the 9th edition of the East African University Games in Mukono last year. The event was held at Ariranga Hotel, on Friday.

"I feel honored and surprised by this award but I am very grateful to the university for the support they have rendered to me. I 'am the first tennis player to graduate at this University and after getting the diploma I'm going to pursue my first degree," Oringa who also honored as the best tennis coach said.

"I urge all sports people to read as they do sports because at one point someone will have to retire from sports and do other things," Oringa advised.

Oringa was echoing vice chairman local organizing committee Vincent Kisenyi who had earlier in his remarks urged the students to follow UCU's theme; "a complete education for a complete person".

But cautioned them to "acknowledge their responsibility" by prioritizing academics first, protect their images and manage their time well as well as treating sports as a way of relaxing on top of staying motivated among other attributes.

Oringa was crowned by UCU Vice Chancellor Rev. Dr. Canon John Senyonyi alongside Sports woman of the year, netballer Alice Wasagali.

The Most Valuable Players and the most improved ones from the 16 sports disciplines the University competed in were also rewarded with medals.
