A Kampala businessman was shot dead by security operatives in Kasese town in a foiled robbery at Centenary Bank, Kasese branch mid-this week.
One suspect was arrested, while another suspected accomplice escaped.
The Kasese district Police commander, Bob Kagarura, said the incident took place at about 11.00am on Wednesday, when suspected robbers driving a Toyota Premio registration number UAV 126X, entered Centenary Bank premises with unclear motives.
He identified the deceased as Christopher Kayizi, a businessman in Lweza, Kampala, also a resident of Matugga in Wakiso district.
The arrested suspect was identified as Moses Anikwa and the fugitive as John Kizito.
“When the vehicle entered the bank premises, security guards tried to close the gate and call the Police, but the suspects sensed danger and tried to drive out, said Kagarura.
“The vehicle, however, hit a pavement and stopped. One of the occupants jumped out and tried to escape and was shot dead.”
He said the group is suspected to be part of the gangsters who have been robbing cash and property from travellers along the Kasese-Mbarara highway.
Kagarura said the Police suspect that the three could have been using guns on their robbery missions.
“We are going to interrogate the suspect in Police custody so that we get more information before we arraign him in court to answer robbery charges,” he added.
In December last year, two thugs were killed by the Police and one gun recovered during an exchange of fire near Kasese Cobalt plant along the Kasese-Mbarara highway.
The head of criminal investigations at Kasese Police Station, Joseph Suuna, said Kayizi’s body was taken to Kasese municipality Health Centre III mortuary while waiting for his relatives to claim it.
