International friendly
March 26
Nigeria v Uganda
Ideally, you want every player in the squad to be a leader, but only one can wear the armband.
With captain Andrew Mwesigwa dropped ahead of Uganda’s high-profile friendly against Nigeria next week, Wednesday, Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic will have to identify an ideal replacement for the future.
If the Serbian opts to look at experience, goalkeeper Denis Onyango and striker Geoffrey Massa are candidates for the team’s captaincy role.
The two were part of the squad that was selected for the friendly due to be played at the newly constructed Akwa Ibom International stadium in Ayo.
Incidentally, both Onyango and Massa are the only survivors from the team that humbled Nigeria during that famous 2-1 win at Namboole Stadium in 2007.
During that memorable game, Massa tormented the Super Eagles’ back-four, earning the Cranes two precious penalties that were successfully converted by David Obua and Ibrahim Sekagya.
Tony Mawejje and Moses Oloya have also been excluded for unclear reasons but Denis Iguma returns to the team for the first time in over three months.
The Cranes will have two training sessions before travelling on Sunday evening. They will have another session in Abuja on Monday.
