New York Red Bulls have enrolled so many footballers over the years —from unknowns to stars like Thierry Henry —but few if not none as professional and with the personality of Ibrahim Sekagya.

As such, the club found it necessary to retain the retired Ugandan star as a youth football development coach.

“Ibrahim had a great playing career and is also a great person. He is a true professional,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Ali
Curtis.

“His successes for both club and country speak for themselves, and the length of his career is a testament to his character and work ethic.

“We thank him for his service to the New York Red Bulls, and we look forward to working with him and integrating his knowledge and experience into helping both our coaching staff and our young players at all levels.”

Sekagya’s professional career has been incredible.

After inspiring Salzburg to three Austrian Bundesliga titles, and Austrian Cup during which he also served as captain for the club, Sekagya was named the fan’s player of the year in the 2008-2009 season.

Sekagya later joined New York in 2013.

That year, Sekagya played eight games as New York won the 2013 Supporters Shield. In 2014, the former Cranes captain helped the club to the Eastern Conference Championship.

“Ibrahim understands the game incredibly well,” said Red Bulls head Coach Jesse Marsch.

“That’s what allowed him to play at a high level for so many years. He will be a great resource to our staff, and I expect him to have a very strong impact on our young players, especially our young defenders,” Marsch added.

Sekagya told the club’s website that: “I appreciate this opportunity. This is something that I wanted to do in my career. It’s a good opportunity, it will be a bit of a transition, so it’s good to do this at a club I know. Staying within the family of Red Bull was important to me. It’s almost eight years between my time here and Salzburg.”
