JAS Mangat overcame a turbo charger failure to claim a podium place in the Zambia International Rally on Sunday.

African champion Mohammed Essa in a new Subaru was in top form leading from start to finish, scoring maximum 25 Africa championship points. He was followed by Rwandan Davite Giancarlo in second.

Mangat driving a Subaru N12 who tied in second position with Davite at the super special stage on Friday, attacked in the 10-stage first leg on Saturday but suffered a turbo charger failure to drop six minutes behind Essa.

The Ugandan fixed the mechanical failure and maintained third position which was just enough to secure a promising start to his Africa championship campaign with 15 points.

Mangat is now 18 points behind championship leader Davite with the four crucial rounds in East Africa—Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda yet to be tackled. Because of the cost implications Africa championship contenders usually skip the Madagascar event which is the last on the calendar.

Zambia’s Jassy Singh grappled with multiple mechanical challenges but managed to finish fifth to move into second position in the continental standings—just three points behind the leader.
