ASK THE EXPERTS

Q When advertising jobs, employers always say they want documents from a recognised university. I have a degree from Kampala International University; is it a recognised university? What are the recognised universities in Uganda?

Noel, Kampala

A Kampala International University is one of over 20 private universities recognised/accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), according to information on the council’s website. All the five public universities, including Gulu, Busitema and Mbarara, are also accredited. But there are several other privately-owned licenced and chartered universities, and in this case, they are all recognised universities. Please revisit our University Guide we published a few weeks ago for details or visit the NCHE website or offices for a detailed list.

Q I scored COOD in history, economics, divinity, entrepreneurship and a pass 7 in general paper (2003). I have a diploma of Uganda Diploma in Business Studies. Do I qualify for bachelor of procurement and logistics management?

Francis Odongo

A At Makerere University Business School, a student can be admitted for bachelor of procurement as long as they got at least two principal passes in any A’level subjects, according to the public universities joint admissions guidelines. This means that you are eligible for admission under the direct entry scheme. To go through the diploma holders’ entry scheme, you ought to have scored at least a second class diploma from a recognised institution to qualify.

Q I am a primary teacher, who studied Kiswahili and would like to be trained as a Kiswahili tutor. What can I do?

Were

A There are various secondary schools, including those which teach Kiswahili at A’ level. But since you have a Grade III teaching certificate, you can join any tertiary institution and get a diploma. Makerere University School of Languages teaches Kiswahili. You can also look for other diploma-awarding institutions.
