USPA golfer of the year Willy Kitatta kick starts the 2015 golf season in Nairobi when he competes in the Sigona Bowl Open this weekend.

The Uganda Open champion left for Nairobi on Tuesday ready for the two-day tournament due, January 16-17 at the par 72 course.

Kitatta who is contemplating turning professional this year will then return ready for the national team trials due the following weekend at Entebbe and Kitante.

“I’m using all these tournaments as training as I intend to turn pro this year; I want to start earning from the game” Kitatta said.

Meanwhile, national team golfers will by the end of this month be involved in yet another qualifier from where Uganda will pick a team for the Zone 6 Africa Championships to be played at the Uganda Golf Club, Kitante.

Africa’s flagship team event which is due in April attracts about 12 countries annually.

Following a disastrous outing at the president’s cup in Zambia where Uganda finished 7th out of 8 countries, Uganda’s team was disbanded thereafter.

A new team captained by Adolf Muhumuza was selected but were beaten to the East African Community Golf Shield by Kenya who avenged their earlier loss of the East African Challenge to the Ugandans in August.

As has been the norm with the current executive of the UGU, new faces might emerge on the team depending on the performance during the trials.

As the Uganda Golf team celebrated winning the East African Challenge at Entebbe Club in August last year,  they were quickly reminded by UGU president Kiryowa Kiwanuka that it was only the beginning of many tasks ahead.
