Five hundred members of Ddwaniro Dairy Farmers Co-operative Limited and Rwamata Women Milk Vendors Association in Kiboga district have received over sh700m from Uganda Development Bank (UDB) for dairy development.

The Minister of State for Fisheries, Ruth Nankabirwa, announced the loan during a meeting with the Kiboga Livestock Farmers and Cooperative Development Society at Kapeke village in Nyamiringa sub-county recently.

She urged the processors to pay the short term loan to the Bank in time, as per the agreed contract.

“The funds will enable the groups to procure milk processors, cooler machines and power generators, to enable farmers keep the dairy products in proper state,” Nankabirwa, who lobbied for the funds, said.

She said the loan is targeting densely populated cattle keeping areas in Uganda.

Nankabirwa, who is also the Kiboga Woman MP, said the loan is payable in 10 years.

The Kiboga cattle corridor comprises Kapeke, Lwamata Ddwaniro, Kibiga, Lwamata, Bukomero and Muwanga. But the areas are not connected to the national power grid, which affects milk preservation.

Nankabirwa said the Government plans to extend electricity to the areas through the rural electrification programme over the next five years.

“President Yoweri Museveni is aware of the electricity problem. It will be solved within the next five years,” Nankabirwa said.

Adolf Ndabagyeize, one of the loan beneficiaries, said the association intends to start making packaging material for their milk products.
