A grieving mother has accused her maid of killing one of her twins in what so far appears a mysterious death.

Mable Bainomugaso, a resident of Central Zone Kitebi says on the fateful day, she left home with her children (twins) to attend to her shop that is located in the neighbourhood.

At about 1.00pm, she says, one of the children, Kakuru, started crying because he was hungry. She rang the maid, Brenda Twinomujuni, to pick him and take him for lunch, then later return him and take his brother Kato.

After an hour, which Mable thought was quite a while, she locked up her shop and went home to check on Kakuru. She did not get far.  Midway, the maid came running announcing that Kakuru was dead!

Mable rushed home to ascertain what the maid had just told her; she found Kakuru lying in bed, out cold.

She made a deafening alarm, attracting residents who gathered at her home and had it not been for the swift action of police that had been alerted, Twinomujuni would have been dead.

Angry residents were about to lynch her accusing her of always mistreating the children whenever the mother was away.

Maid narrates her story

Twinomujuni says she does not know what happened to Kakuru. She says when she took the child home to feed him; he refused to eat or drink and kept crying.

Residents gathered outside the house where Kakuru died

She took him to bed to rest, and when he fell asleep she went to take a bath. She returned to check on Kakuru but noticed he was breathing with difficulty. She rushed to the neighbours and informed them the child was unwell.

They rushed him to a nearby clinic, but he did not make it and died on the way. Twinomujuni denied ever mistreating the twins saying she was fond of them.

Esther Babirye, one the neighbours, corroborated her story saying the maid had called her saying the child seemed unwell and had rushed home to see what was wrong. She says she found the child breathing with difficulty and they rushed him to a clinic, only he did not make it.

History of torture

The grieving mother was quick to point a finger at Twinomujuni saying she had always mistreated her children. "Brenda you have killed my child," she cried.

"I told you never to beat my children and thought you had reformed; now you have killed my child! God will pay you in the same currency," she cried.

Sam Nayebale, an uncle to the deceased said they had always warned Mable about the maid. He said she once beat up Kato so bad his cheek got swollen. The maid then apologised and begged for mercy promising to reform.

The CID boss at Kitebi police station, Onesmas Mwesigwa, said the body had been taken to Mulago hospital for a postmortem. He said the maid had been charged with murder on file number SD: 37/07/01/15.
