The Government has embarked on a sh10b project to repair part of the deteriorating Kafu-Kiryandongo road.

The project is being implemented by Energo Projekt, a Serbian firm, which was contracted by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) in a contract that was not open to bidding.

Bruno Musoke, the UNRA manager in charge of the project, said on Friday that the repairs are expected to be completed by late this year or early next year.

He said the repairs are short term, pending the reconstruction of the entire Kafu-Karuma road.

Musoke said Energo Projekt was chosen because is already undertaking a 90b project to overlay an asphalt layer on the 166km Kawempe-Kafu road.

He said the repair of the road was long overdue considering that it was constructed in the late 1990s.

“These repairs should have taken place much earlier because a road is expected to serve between five to 10 years,” Musoke said.

UNRA spokesperson Dan Alinange said another firm will repair the remaining portion of the road.
