Fences serve a number of purposes, ranging from security, privacy to beauty and aesthetics. The type of fence to be used depends on the homeowner’s preference, but common types include brick walls, block walls, trees, steel grill and chain link.

Concrete block wall fence
Construction of a fence using concrete blocks tends to be faster because the blocks are larger than the standard bricks. They also absorb less water compared to bricks and, thus, tend to have a longer lifespan. Concrete block walls need a strong foundation that can withstand wind storms and soil conditions.

The main advantage of concrete block walls in comparison to smaller, brick walls is that they can be reinforced by inserting vertical lengths of rebar posts or using grout.

For a more appealing look, colouring and split face techniques can be employed. This technique gives the block walls a rougher face, mimicking the natural look and feel of quarried stone.

For applications such as highway sound control walls, the design can be complex and artistic.
One of the main drawbacks, however, is that they are less decorative. While the surface can be covered with veneered masonry, the decorative options are limited.

Brick walls add value to a building and endure for generations with style and class that other materials cannot match.
However, since bricks are made from clay, they are susceptible to erosion and weathering, which can cause damage.

To overcome such problems, one can opt for concrete bricks, which are stronger.
For brick or block walls to be able to stand firm, they usually need a beam and column, but some can exist on piers. For the case of very high walls, care should be taken to avoid cracking.

Chain link fences
This is inexpensive and easy to install. It is versatile, as it comes in any length and height. Small areas can also be enclosed to keep children in or out. Dog kennels and runs of all sizes can be constructed using chain link fencing. The main posts firmly  stand if buried in cement.

The chain link comes in rolls or panels cut to any length and are stretched across the posts, before being attached with wires.

Home owners can easily install chain link fences themselves. A gate is easily added at any point, which is another reason why chain link is popular.

The fence can be designed to blend with its surroundings, so the house and garden are all that passers-by notice. Chain link fences require little or no maintenance.  It is durable and cheap, compared to many other options.

Iron rail fences are effective security barriers. Decorative wrought-iron gates and fencing can add value to a property, in addition to beautifying it. Pointed caps on railings might be effective in discouraging intruders.
