UGANDA collected sixteen medals as the CANA zone 3 and 4 swimming championship ended on Sunday at the Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka.
Uganda boys’ team picked 3 silver medals and two bronze for a total of five while the girls led by Olympian Jamila Lunkuse, walked away with 7 gold, 3 silver and one bronze to return with a total of 16 medals.
Uganda medals were won by Jamila Lunkuse (5 gold + 2 silver), Rebecca Ssengonzi (3 silver), Elisha Ekirikubinza (1 silver+1 bronze) and Jethro Ssengonzi (1 silver+ 1 bronze).
Kenya collected a total of 59 medals to top the annual championship that attracted ten countries from the East, Central and Southern Africa.
The overall winners amassed 1,741 points to top the event, Zimbabwe was second with 1,638.50, South Africa (1,635pts) were third while host Zambia finished 5th overall, with Uganda (267pts) finishing 8th out of ten countries.
Uganda’s medal count was limited by the small number of swimmers they took to the event. Uganda entered only 16 swimmers while most countries had double the number of athletes.
In May the Uganda Swimming Federation will hold the Uganda National Junior championship, the federation’s annual awards night and the master championships on dates yet to be confirmed.
