Olympian Jamila Lunkuse’s star continued to rise when she won gold in the 200m breaststroke final at the Olympic youth development centre pool in Lusaka, Zambia, on Friday.

The 16-year old, captain of the Uganda girls team at the CANA zone 3 and 4 championships, clocked 2:53.10 to beat South Africa’s Koen Mieke (2:58.73) and Zambia’s Paljk Tilka (2:58.79) to the gold.

She was also on top of her game in the 100m breaststroke clocking 1:17.29 to bag another gold though the time was below her championship record of 1:17.03.

Lunkuse (28.09) wasn’t as lucky though in the 50m freestyle where she was beaten to gold by Botswana’s Naomi Ruele by six seconds.

Fourteen year old Jethro Ssengonzi was Uganda’s other top performer on the day winning silver over the 100m breaststroke distance with Elisha Ekirikubinza finishing third.

Ekirikubinza was also 4th in the 50m freestyle where Jethro Ssengonzi finished 12th.

In the 12 and under 50m freestyle category, Rebecca Ssengozi and Hezekiah Owour finished fifth while Anthea Mudanye finished eighth overall in the 100m breastsroke.

By the end of Saturday’s action Kenyan swimmers were still leading the overall standings with 1741 points.
