The Masaka district Woman MP, Freda Mubanda, was blocked from accessing the tent where the Nabagereka, Sylvia Nagginda, was seated during the closure of the children cultural retreat on Saturday.
The one-week retreat popularly known as Ekisakaate that was held at Blessed Sacrament Secondary School Kimaanya in Masaka district was closed by Nagginda.
When Mubanda arrived at the function she walked towards the VIP tent where Nagginda and the Finance Minister Maria Kiwanuka were seated, but was intercepted by the Nabagereka’s royal guards.
Mubanda’s attempts to explain to the guards, whom she was, fell on deaf ears as they barked at her as the other guests looked on.
Later, other officials at the function intervened to save Mubanda from the guards.
Mubanda who was visibly disappointed later sat outside the VIP tent and at the end of the function, left the premises quietly, declining to talk to journalists.
The chairman of the kisakaate organising committee, John Paul Mugwanya, later told the New Vision that Mubanda was one of the officials that organised the function and contributed money for its preparations on top of sponsoring 12 children to participate.
He regretted the manner in which the guards treated the MP.
Each child paid sh150,000 to participate in the retreat.
A total of 157 children of ages between eight and 18 from different primary and secondary schools in Buddu county participated in the retreat.
During the retreat, children are trained in various cultural disciplines, nutrition and health, justice in society, conflict resolution and talent development, among other issues.
It is organised annually under the Nnabagereka Development Fund aimed at revitalising and strengthening moral values, leadership roles, domestic duties, spiritual and practical skills for the children and youth in Buganda.
Nagginda urged parents to always be the first teachers in the children's upbringing, adding that a girl conceiving at a tender age affects her future in many ways.
