President Yoweri Museveni will on Thursday launch the Vision 2040 plan, which if implemented, will make the country achieve middle-income status and push the per capita income from $560 to $9,500 over the next 30 years.
This implies that on average, every Uganda earns $560, a figure calculated by the taking the total sum of all economic activities (GDP) and dividing it by population of the country.
Unveiling the logo yesterday, the vic- chairperson of the National Planning Authority (NPA), Abel Rwendeire, said the Vision 2040 is a culmination of work involving the private sector, civil society and government agencies.
The Vision 2040 logo shows the crested crane bird in flight with the national flag beneath it.
Rwendeire said during this time, the country hopes to utilise resources like oil and agriculture to sustain growth at 8.2%.
The success of Vision 2040, according to Rwendeire, will depend on the implementation of the National Development Plan that was launched about two years ago.
“We have to move a little faster if we are to catch up. We don’t want projects like Karuma to delay,” said Rwendeire.
Rwendeire said for a long time, the country has been bogged down by the slow implementation of many good initiatives. For instance, Vision 2025, launched in 1999, lacked an implementing institution and a legal mandate which has now been bestowed upon NPA.
Flagship projects that are expected to drive Vision 2040 include tourism, ICT, agriculture, oil and gas. Significant revenues from oil and gas are expected to plug the infrastructure deficit.
The Office of the Prime Minister will be the co-ordinating and implementing organ of the vision, according to Rwendeire.
