DEO Akope underlined his number one status in the Uganda professional golf ranks when he shot eight under par to win the Mehta Open on Friday.
Akope who recently was runner up to Herman Mutaawe at the Kabale Easter open, beat his nearest challengers including last year’s winner Saidi Mawa by 5 strokes to win the biggest share of the sh3m on offer.
Mawa, Silver Opio and Fred Wanzala returned a similar score of 67 to tie in second place with Brian Mwesigwa’s 69 helping him to a third place finish.
The tightly contested tournament at the picturesque and tight nine-hole-par 70 Lugazi course, had George Olayo, Herman Mutaawe, Brian Toolit, Grace Ocici, Opio Onito and Ian Odokonyero, also tying in fourth place with 70 gross each.
The annual tournament that attracts amateurs and professionals is sponsored by City Tyres and is a toast for local golfers on the UGU calendar.
Next on the calendar is the Tana Memorial to be hosted by Tororo Golf Club.
