JINJA - A student who dumped her two-week-old baby in pit latrine with intent to kill it so she could return to school, has been jailed for five years.

Sarah Musenero, a former student of Busia Secondary School in Busia town, pleaded guilty before Justice Patricia Basaza of the Jinja High Court.

Prosecution led by Margaret Nakiggude stated that on May 3, 2013, Musenero went to Kiyunga Senior Secondary School in Kamuli where she dumped her baby and it died.

A weeping Musenero told court that her baby had fallen sick yet its father, Ngobi Kato, had neglected her during pregnancy.

“My parents rejected me and I didn’t want to see my child suffering, so I dumped her in the latrine. I must confess before this honorable court for what I did and I am sorry,” she pleaded.

Justice Basaza sent her to Kirinya Prisons to serve four more years since she had already spent one on remand.
