JINJA - Ugandan golfer Denis Anguyo won a sudden death play-off against Silver Opio to claim the professionals’ category of the Kakira Open at Jinja Club on Friday.
With both players returning 143 gross after 36 holes, Kampala-based Anguyo edged his Entebbe counterpart by a stroke after a replay on the 16, 17 and 18 holes.
Anguyo registered pars on the three holes, with Opio getting a bogey on the 16th to hand the victory to the towering golfer.
Anguyo consequently gets the biggest chunk of sh6m staked by the sponsors and also gets a big boost ahead of the sh10m Paulo Ngorogoza memorial tournament due at the Garuga Kihihi course next weekend.
“My short game was key in this victory but generally I feel my general performance is now good enough; my game is on, at Garuga I will play safe and see what happens,” Anguyo, who registered ten birdies en-route to winning, said.
The Jinja cast of Fred Wanzala and Opio Onito finished third and fourth, respectively, with Vincent Byamukama – who won last weekend’s Mukwano open – finishing fifth.
The tightly contested event had the next five golfers including last year’s winner Saidi Mawa who made the cut all returning 151 gross.
The main event tees off on Saturday with the subsidiary group before the climax and official prize-giving on Sunday in the last Union event on the Uganda Golf Union calendar.
